About 5 years ago I really started to get into clean, natural, and organic makeup. My delve into non-toxic skincare and makeup products started due to my acne. Internally I cleaned up what I was eating and putting into my body, so then the next thing to do was to eliminate any and all toxic products I put on my body. But that’s a story for another day!
My ole’ faithful tried and true mascara used to be L’oreal’s Voluminous Volume Building mascara. You’ve probably already seen it, or heck even uses it. So many makeup artists and gurus call it their “holy grail” mascara, even outcompeting high end ones. That used to be the same for me until I found my new holy grail. When I tell you that this mascara is just like it, I mean it is just like it! My new favorite tried and true mascara is W3ll People’s Expressionist Volumizing Mascara (black).
What I love the most is how incredible this mascara performs, because as some of you know not all non-toxic makeup is created equal, and I’ve tried my fair share of “duds”. This by far is my favorite mascara I’ve tried to date. It performs just as well as L’oreal’s Voluminous Black. It makes me feel so confident knowing that what I’m putting on/in my body is not causing me any harm. Did you know that by European standards there are 1,372 ingredients BANNED from being put in makeup/body care products? Did you also know that in the USA there are only 8, yes you read that correctly, ONLY 8. But, this is a post for another day.
The natural bristles and wand shape are amazing. I’m very partial to natural bristles, as I feel the bristles best coat the mascara on my eyelashes. The rubber ones just don’t do it for me. I also really like the hourglass shape of the wand because it gets every eyelash coated perfectly with ease. It really gives me a good lift and volume! It also really separates my eyelashes and doesn’t clump them together, and I have nubs, so I need all help on deck, haha!
This mascara is tried and tested, as I’ve worn it daily on my 10-hour workdays! It doesn’t flake off below my eyes, which I’ve found with a lot of natural/organic mascaras. It also doesn’t dry out my eyelashes, and they don’t feel brittle, thank gosh because there isn’t much to work with, haha!
Another thing I absolutely love about this mascara is that it is EWG verified. EWG Healthy Living is an app that you can scan or look up body care, skincare, makeup, household products, food, etc and see if the product is toxic or its level of concern for toxicity. It breaks the ingredients down individually and grades them, by studies done on it. It will let you know the concern for cancer, allergies, environmental, developmental, skin, and asthma. When a product is EWG verified it means that the product is free from EWG’s chemicals of concern and meets their highest standards for health and transparency.

- Castor Seed Oil- Conditions lashes, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, seals in moisture, strengthens lashes, prevents breakage, boosts follicle health & makes lashes shiny/glossy
- Sunflower Seed Oil- Nourishes and hydrates with essential fatty acids, makes lashes shiny/glossy, strengthens lashes, stimulates hair growth, seals in moisture
- Cellulose Plant Fiber- A natural thickening agent that helps volumize lashes
Overall I really love this mascara and will not be switching anytime soon. It coats my lashes perfectly and performs beautifully. I don’t feel like I’m compromising beauty for health at all! It nourishes and volumizes my lashes so well, and wears all day long. I’d recommend this mascara over and over again to all my friends and family. I even got my mom hooked on it!
