Let’s Get Back to Reading Our Physical Bibles

I love love loveeee to collect KJV Bibles. I’m an avid thrifter, and I love finding heavily used Bibles at thrift stores. There’s something about flipping through someone’s notes, dog-eared pages, highlighted verses, watermarks from tears, and everything in between. The Bible I’m holding in the picture above is very special to me because my dad gave it to me some years ago. It’s worn in. It’s highlighted. It’s underlined. It’s dog eared. It’s annotated. It’s my lifeline as a Christian. Each day I grow older in this tech-driven era, the more I crave the old-fashioned way of doing things. From being able to order and have your groceries delivered to your front door, or to there being a near app for everything, there’s little that can’t be done by lifting your finger. The more prevalent I see churchgoers reading scripture off of their phones. I miss when you’d hear the rustling of pages when your pastor said, “turn to chaper…”. I miss seeing everyone carrying their Bibles walking into church. There’s something so nostalgic about it, but also a sign of the times. For some reason this really strikes me, but also makes me sad. Are we that far removed? The Bible is the living and breathing Word of our Lord Jesus Christ. The more we read it, the more we taste, feel, experience, and understand Him. You just can’t connect to the Word in an as intimate and personal way as you can with it physically in your palms. I love how Hebrews 4:12 puts it, “for the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart”. The Word of God transcends time and is living. There is and will never be another text like it. It’s reading you as you’re reading it. For every season of life you walk in, there are chapters and verses for you. As sons and daughters of Christ, we thirst for Him. I love the way Psalm 42:1-2 says it, “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God: when shall I come and appear before God?”. Nothing satisfies our soul’s needs like God can. Grab your Bible. Carry it with you wherever you go. It is our weapon against the devil’s plans. It is our lifeline for life on this side of Heaven. As Christians, it is vital to utilize our Bibles on a daily bases. The devil is prowling and seeks to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10). It’s imperative that we do not let our guard down because the second we do, the devil will sweep in and most times so subtly, and wants nothing but only to destroy you. God needs us to be so in tune with His Word. Set aside time to spend time in God’s Word. Silence your phone, and crack open your Bible. Use this time to still your mind and gain an intimate knowledge of our Heavy Father, Abba.
